2006 Cuvaison Pinot Noir Block F5

2006 presented the North Coast with many challenges, not the least of which was steady rain and cold, overcast skies through the later half of vintage. It had already been a season of high mildew pressure and we had to stay sharp in the vineyard to guide our grapes through harvest. Fortunately for Carneros, most of the Pinot Noir was ready to pick prior to the rains. We did an additional pass through the vineyards to remove leaves around the fruit and expose the grapes to wind and sun. Once the fruit was selectively hand harvested we culled out any unwanted fruit on our sorting table. Our efforts paid off handsomely and we were able to produce another outstanding singular Pinot from our Block F5. Planted entirely to Dijon Clone 115, the F5 produces a complete wine, with fine aromatics and dense, plush fruit. The ’06 bottling shows off strawberry and raspberry fruit with allspice and smoky oak notes. On the palate the wine is lush and mouth-coating with supple tannins and complimentary acidity. The deep fruit and brushy spice-cake tones linger on the tongue and beg for another taste.

2005 Syrah Carneros

100% pure Carneros Estate Syrah, culled from three of our five selections, the 2005 features a lovely floral, strawberry nose with coffee, pepper and spice tones. On the palate the wine offers up plenty of sappy cherry fruit and round, gentle tannins. Once again, the shallow clay soils have calmed the vigorous Syrah vine and delivered a wine of concentration and complexity, typical of this variety. Limited production

2004 Merlot Carneros

2004 was a beautiful year for Carneros Merlot, with a fine spring, low yields and the fruit arriving in pristine condition, fully ripe and intensely concentrated. After aging the wine for18 months in medium-toast, fine-grain French oak, we blended 90% Merlot with 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot. The resulting wine is flush with brushy truffle and black tea notes, scent of plum and black cherries and a smidge of wild thyme. On the palate, the wine is full bodied and richly textured, bursting with blackberry, cherry and brambleberry fruit. The natural acidity provided by our cool climate site pairs wonderfully with the supple, fine tannins finishing the wine with both length and finesse.

2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Mount Veeder

2005 was a long cool growing season following a wet winter. Though many vineyrds in California experienced large crops, the steep, well drained slopes of Mt. Veeder drained moisture away, engendering a modest yield of ripe, focused fruit. The more I taste the ‘05’s, the more convinced I am that they may have the best ageing potential of any vintage since ’95. Our offering embraces the vibrant red fruit tones, raspberry and cherry, that pre-dominate in this vintage, layered with mocha, cocoa, vanillin notes, with a sweet, dense core and solid tannins, finely hewed for long cellaring. The Cab is tempered with Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot affording additional depth and complexity to this saturated wine.

2003 Brandlin Cabernet

In 1926, the Brandlin family first planted this exquisite Mount Veeder site upon the Mayacamas range high above the Napa Valley. Even back then the Brandlin’s knew this was an exceptional place to grow wine grapes. In 1998 Cuvaison purchased the estate vineyard and planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Now 80 years later in commemoration of this historic family and vineyard we are pleased to introduce the first-ever limited production BRANDLIN Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine has an intoxicating blend of cinnamon and clove with black currant, cassis and black cherry fruit. The palate is full bodied with licorice and plum, supported by an ample core of firm, yet supple, tannins characteristic of mountain-grown Cabernet.
